Warrior #22 Stetson Gearin up to bat during Saturday game

Cleveland)- It’s not too often a high school baseball team plays two different opponents on the same day. It’s even more rare to play those two games in different places. That’s exactly what White County Warriors  did on Saturday as they traveled to Jefferson to play the Dragons at 2 p.m. before traveling to Lawrenceville  to take on Central Gwinnett at 6:30 p.m. With the wintry weather wreaking havoc on the first two weeks of the season,  White County played the double-header to try to make up for lost time. The Warriors dropped the first game as Jefferson raced out for the 9-1 victory. But the Warriors picked up their first win of the season in game two beating Central Gwinnett 10-2.

Jefferson used steady pitching and some clutch hitting to jump out to an early lead in game one. The Dragons scored three runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings and added two more in the 4th. White County’s only run came in the 3rd on a Tray Gearing double that scored Trey Allen. Gearing would finish the game 2 for 3 at the plate. Allen went 1 for 2 and also pitched the last two innings for the Warriors.

In game two, the White County bats came alive. Tray Gearing continued his good day in the 1st inning with an RBI double scoring Trent Morgan. Gearing would cross home later that inning on a Parker Applewhite single. The Warriors kept up the pressure in the 2nd. After Chris Jackson walked to leadoff the inning, Jason Ward roped a triple to centerfield to score Jackson. Sean Kennedy came on as a courtesy runner for Ward, and promptly stole home to give White County a 4-0 lead after 2 innings. The Warriors broke it open in the 3rd as they added three more runs. After back to back singles by Applewhite and Jay Taylor, and a walk to Chris Jackson, Ward singled to left to drive in Applewhite. Trey Allen followed with an RBI groundout. Trent Morgan capped off the big inning with an RBI double to right. The Warriors got another run in the 4th on a Taylor bases-loaded walk. The final two runs for White County came in the top of the 7th inning. Stetson Gearing doubled to drive in Joel Pritchett. Taylor then finished off his good day at the plate with an RBI single.

White County pitchers combined to allow only two runs and four hits while striking out 15 and allowing no walks. Joel Pritchett pitched 2.1 innings allowing no runs on one hit and striking out four. Trey Cantrell went 2 innings and recorded every out via the strikeout. Chris Jackson came on in the 5th and went 2.1 innings striking out five.

The Warriors finished with 16 hits in the contest. Tray Gearing and Taylor finished with three hits a piece. Stetson Gearing, Applewhite, Morgan, and Ward all had two hits. Kennedy and Cantrell would finish with one hit. Jackson finished with four walks and two runs scored in the game.

White County will travel to Dahlonega to take on Lumpkin County at UNG’s Bob Stein stadium Tuesday night at 5:55.

The other makeup game with Lumpkin County is set for Saturday morning at 10:30 AM at Coolray Field. WRWH will bring you all the action from the home of the Gwinnett Braves on Newstalk 1350 WRWH, and streaming live on wrwh.com  and TuneIn radio app.

The Warriors will once again play a strange double-header on Saturday. After the game at Coolray Field on Saturday, they will travel back home to take on Central Gwinnett 5 p.m.
