(CLEVELAND) – The Truett McConnell University women’s soccer team opened their spring season Saturday, inside the TMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex, where they were matched up against Georgia Gwinnett College, and ultimately fell to a final score of 4-2. The No. 23 Lady Bears’ 12-game win streak was snapped, which put TMU at 12-1-1, 12-0-1 AAC on the year, while the Grizzles extended their win streak to three with a record of 3-3.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

In the first eight minutes of regulation, TMU earned a penalty kick after a foul in the box, giving the advantage they needed to hit the board first after sophomore Ashleigh Smitherman found the back of the net (1-0). GGC gained momentum to secure a goal in the 19th minute (1-1), followed by an indirect penalty kick of their own, which proved unsuccessful due to a diving save by freshman goalie Addy Galason. The Grizzlies continued to force the Lady Bears to work on defense, resulting in a score of 1-4 at halftime.

It wasn’t until the 76th minute that Smitherman scored once again, leaving TMU only two away from bridging the gap (2-4). The Lady Bears followed up with a shot on goal, while also earning three corner kicks, which proved not enough as they suffered their first loss (2-4) of the spring season.

LEADERS

Smitherman led the way with two goals, along with five shots, three on goal. Freshman Hope Kenney had two shots, one on goal, while junior Sydney League and freshman JK Hughes had one shot apiece. Galason recorded a season high of nine saves on the night.
