Nancy Buffington Self, 89, died Saturday, 25 February 2023. Born and raised in Gadsden, Alabama to Mabel and Homer Buffington, she graduated with honors from Gadsden High School in 1951. Together with her husband James Self they raised six children, living in Gadsden and Huntsville, Alabama, and Cleveland, Mississippi until a transfer took them to Dahlonega where she lived for almost 40 years.

An active member of Dahlonega United Methodist Church for 33 years, Nancy served the church in many volunteer capacities. United Methodist Women benefited from her leadership; she served as President of the District UMW and held several administrative positions at the local level. She especially enjoyed socializing with the DUMC Hilltoppers group.

Mrs. Self is survived by four children: Sharon (Paul) Murphree of Round Rock, TX, Randall Self of Berlin, Germany, Celia (Dean) Newton of Dahlonega, and Alison Holland of Murrayville; one son-in-law, George Johnson of Benton, AR; one sister, Sue Lankford of Hokes Bluff, AL, two sisters-in-law, Patsy Pruett of Spartanburg, SC and Ann Bickle of Attalla, AL; twelve grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Self of Dahlonega, two sons, Michael Self of Crystal River, FL and Tim Self of Benton, AR, granddaughter Catherine Murphree of Round Rock TX, sister Sina Hutchens of Gallant, AL.

Graveside service will be held Friday, March 31 at 11:00 am at Dahlonega Memorial Park, Pastor Christy Greenwald officiating. A reception will follow at Dahlonega Funeral Home.
