Firefighters battle barn fire on Highway 284 Cleveland

(Cleveland)-A pole barn and contents were destroyed by a fire Monday evening in White County.  Shortly before 7:30 pm, White County 911 Communications received a call and multiple reports from passersby about a “barn” structure fire in the 900 block of Highway 284 in Cleveland. White County 911 immediately dispatched a structure fire assignment to the location.

White County Public Safety Spokesman Bryce Barrett said responding agencies included White County Fire, White County EMS, and White County Emergency Management (EMA). Also responding to the incident, acting in mutual aid, were the Cleveland Fire Department and the LACI Fire Service from Lee Arrendale State Prison.  Barrett said, “Numerous volunteers from the White County Fire Service also responded and played a critical role in the response, contributing alongside our full-time fire personnel.”

Upon arrival, units reported a roughly 60’x60’ “pole barn” structure, fully involved with fire. Fire personnel completed safety measures and began combatting the blaze. Efforts were focused on containing the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby vegetation and other exposures.

According to Barrett, within minutes, fire personnel were able to achieve containment of the fire and began to extinguish it. Once the fire was out efforts then focused towards checking for and extinguishing hotspots or fire extensions.

White County EMA UAS1 (Drone) was dispatched and provided an aerial view and fire overwatch. White County EMA’s REHAB unit (operated by White County’s Community Emergency Response Team) was also dispatched and responded providing rehabilitation to firefighters in recovery from combating the blaze.

Barrett said firefighters remained on scene throughout the evening, ensuring the fire was fully extinguished. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
