(LEXINGTON, Ky. )– The No. 17 University of North Georgia (UNG) rifle team fought hard in Lexington, Ky. against No. 10 Akron in a 4,692-4,647 loss on Sunday morning.
Against a highly ranked Akron team that has only lost once this season, the Nighthawks held their own in another impressive performance.
Despite the loss, UNG was able to eke out a win in the Air Rifle discipline, beating the Zips by one point 2,358-2,357.
Freshman Alison Sutherlin led the way for UNG with a 594 and 42 centers in Air Rifle. Her performance was the best of all individuals in the discipline.
Junior Maya Cameron earned a top-5 Air Rifle performance with 37 centers and a 591 score. Sophomore Abigail Swain followed Cameron in fifth place with new personal best as she tallied 40 centers and 589 points.
In smallbore, Akron held the advantage with five Zips earning the top five spots on the individual leaderboard. Cameron and Sutherlin followed respectively in sixth and seventh place.
Sutherlin’s 1,172 aggregate score earned the newcomer a third place finish overall. Her 71 centers found were the third most among any competitor in the field. Cameron earned a fifth place aggregate spot with 1,170 points and 64 centers.
Now the Nighthawks will get ready for their first home match of the season at COL Raymond C. Hamilton Rifle Range on Saturday, Nov. 9. UNG will host the Terriers of Wofford for the all-day event. The Nighthawks went 2-0 against Wofford last season and won their only home event of the year against The Citadel.
