Family Promise supporters pack City Council meeting room

(Cleveland)- The Cleveland City Council held a public hearing last night on a rezoning request by Family Promise of White and Habersham County for a property they purchased at 403 West Kytle Street.  The origination, which assists homeless families, was requesting that the property be rezoned from B-2 Commercial Business to R-2 Multi-Family residential.

The city council was hearing the request following and tie vote earlier by the city planning commission.

Around 40 individuals were present for the hearing in support of the request.

After hearing from several individuals who spoke in favor the council members made a couple of attempts to address the situation including a motion made by Ward 2 Councilwoman Rebecca Yardley that would allow the B-2 zoning remain with a variance for R2- multi-family residential and that the variance stay in place until the property is sold, but  Ward 1 Councilwoman Nan Bowen wanted the group to get a formal variance from the planning commission with certain condition placed on that variance.

Finally, Ward 4 Councilman Bradley Greene made a motion that the request be tabled until their January 10th meeting giving Family Promise time to go before the city planning commission and request a variance that would allow for a Multi-family residential use on a commercial business area.

That motion was approved by a 3 to 1 vote, with Councilwoman Rebecca Yardley voting no noting for the record that she voted no because she did not believe the request should be tabled but rather action taken during that meeting.
