CLEVELAND – After nearly eight months, a Cleveland man is behind bars facing a number of charges related to an alleged White County rape case.

“Back on Jan 30. 2018, at around 5:30 a.m. a woman reported that a man broke into her house wearing a mask and raped her,” according to an email from White County Sheriff’s Capt. Rick Kelley. “The suspect fled the scene when the neighbor’s car started up.”

Matthew Daniel Gillespie, 26, of Cleveland was arrested Sept. 18 and faces charges of rape, first-degree burglary (felony), possession of methamphetamine, exploit/inflict pain to deprive essential services to disabled person, elder person or resident (felony), and possession of a sawed-off shotgun, sawed-off rifle, machine gun, dangerous weapon, or silencer.

“After learning some new information, White County Sheriff’s Office investigators executed a search warrant at Matthew Gillespie’s residence, which is located next door to where the incident took place,” Kelley said by email. “Based on evidence collected at the scene back on Jan. 30 and evidence collected during the search warrant, Matthew Gillespie was arrested and taken into custody.”
