( Cleveland)- They talked trash again during Monday’s White County Commission work session. The commissioners noted that litter along white county roads, is a major problem, all areas of the county are affected but the commissioners zeroed in on Highway 129 south of Cleveland near the White County Transfer station.
Commission Chairman Travis Turner said he got a first hand look at that area over the weekend, “ we pride ourselves, we’re the gateway to the mountains and as soon as you cross from Hall County into White County, I mean129, it’s ugly,” said Turner.
Attending the meeting was Bobby Bright, with Advanced Disposal, which operates the county transfer station and Matt Needham, District Engineer with the Georgia Department of Transportation. During the discussion Bright told the commissioners that, “it’s in every county,” (the trash problem), he said it’s a training problem… letting the people know that they need to secure their trash load.
According to Bright, the majority of the problem centers with the private sector, because most of the commercial haulers have properly secured trucks.
Needam told the commissioners the Department of Transportation is working on outsourcing the mowing of road right of ways, included in that will be scheduled trash pickup.
For the immediate problem Commission Chairman Turner ask Needham if he could arrange for a detainee work detail from Blairsville to come in and clean up Highway 129 South.
The commissioners will also be working with Advanced Disposal in an effort to educated transfer customers about the need secure their loads.
