U S Forest Service9-16-15(Undated)-  U.S. Forest Service officials have updated the two biggest north Georgia wildfires

As of mid morning Thursday officials said the Rock Mountain fire, in the Chattooga River Ranger District, has consumed 8,545 acres and is 20 percent contained.  According to officials in addition to ground personnel and equipment they have  five  helicopters and one fixed wing aircraft working the fire.

Forestry officials have scheduled a meeting for 5:30 PM Thursday  at the Foster Park Recreation Center in Young Harris to update local residents and media about the fire fighting efforts and to answer any questions. 

 

The rough ridge fire, in the Cohutta Wilderness Area has burned 24,765 acres and is 40 percent contained.  In addition to the crews they have 2 helicopters assisting the fire suppression efforts.   

 The Conasauga Ranger District has brought in additional Law Enforcement personnel to assist with road closures and fire restrictions.  Officers are increasing patrols and working extended shifts. Hunters preparing for the big game hunt season should remain aware of  many road closures in the fire area.
