James “JR” Rider, age 82, of Dahlonega, Georgia, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2024, after an extended illness. Born on February 8, 1942, in Gainesville, Georgia, JR was the son of the late Henry Rider and the late Flossie Lance Rider. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven siblings and Doug, the beloved son of Sue Forester, who held a special place in JR’s heart.
JR is survived by the love of his life, Sue Forester of Dahlonega; his children, Donna Lynn Jenkins (Tim), Jeff Rider (Paula), and Nawana McHan (Mark), all of Dahlonega; his sister, Evelyn Waters; and his grandchildren, Zack Anderson, Jed Jenkins, Alli Jenkins, Taylor McCune, Luke McHan, and Ryan McHan. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Laney Anderson, Andi Anderson, and C.J. McCune, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives who will cherish his memory.
A man known and loved by many throughout North Georgia, JR was passionate about racing and old cars. In his younger years, he became a local legend for hauling “merchandise” in his supped-up cars through the hills. JR had a personality larger than life and was a master storyteller, captivating all who had the pleasure of listening to him. He was the proud owner and operator of JR’s Roadkill Café in Lumpkin County, a beloved community staple. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR and cheering for his favorite teams, the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs.
Funeral services for JR will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiating. Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 AM until the service hour.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of JR to the American Cancer Society. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
