Melvyn (Mel) Hewins, age 82, of Dahlonega, Georgia was born in Ferndale Michigan to Ruth and Gordon Hewins.

Mel’s family, because of Mel’s professed faith in Jesus, celebrates the knowledge that he is delighting in the wonders of his new heavenly home.

Mel is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Kathleen (Kay) Hewins.  Mel and Kay enjoyed their lives together immensely with family as well as beautiful friendships in and outside of Dahlonega.

Mel is also survived by a flock of people who loved, respected, and cherished his warmth, work ethic, and amazing sense of humor.  This flock includes his brother, Denny Hewins, sister-in-law, Lynn Hewins, son, Gary Hewins, and his wife, Angie Hewins, son, Steve Hewins, daughter, Karen Walters, as well as his daughter-in-law, Nunzia Pezzella, and son-in-law, Tommy Walters.  Mel was also extremely proud of his grandchildren: Ashleigh Smith, Jeffrey Webster, Madalyn Walters, Abigail Hewins, Ross Walters, Joel Hewins, Jordan Hewins as well as his six great grandchildren: Paige, Jake, Hudson, Giselle, Cora and (soon to be born) Phoebe.  Mel was beloved “Uncle Mel” to his wonderful niece and nephews in Michigan: Vicky Jankowski, Scott Hewins, and Kevin Hewins who are parents to Mel’s great nieces and nephews.

Mel graduated from Lawrence Institute of Technology in Southfield Michigan in 1962. Mel’s professional life included leadership roles at Burns Security and Chrysler Corporation but he retired several years ago from being an excellent real estate professional with Monteluce Winery, Berkshire Hathaway, and Metro Brokers. Mel positively impacted the lives of many because of the time and care he put into each real estate transaction.

Over the years, Mel enjoyed attending dances with Kay, hitting golf balls at Achasta golf club, camping at R Ranch in Dahlonega, playing cards and laughing with friends, and enjoying meals and fellowship with family.  Mel loved traveling with Kay, friends, and family to many destinations.  Some of his favorite trips include Italy, Africa, Germany, Denmark, Nevada, and Amelia Island.  Mel grew up in Michigan and raised his family in Ohio, Maryland, and Georgia.

Mel and Kay frequented Dahlonega’s local “Picnic Cafe and Dessertery” on a regular basis for coffee and  fellowship.  Many waitresses and sweet patrons of this coffee shop have enjoyed Mel’s friendly banter over the years.

Mel had a great love for his wife, family and friends. He had a fun-spirited nature and a deep gratitude for what God had given him to enjoy in his life.  He will be missed by many.

A memorial service will be held on August 6th at 11:00 am in the chapel at Dahlonega Funeral Home, 20 Gibson Rd., Dahlonega, GA 30533. Feel free to join the family for visitation at 10:30 am in the chapel. Pastor Gary Hewins, Mel’s son, will officiate the service.
