2-5-16

GULF SHORES, Ala. | Courtney Poole picked up right where she left off in 2015, claiming a five-hit shutout over No. 18 Alabama-Huntsville Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Gulf Coast Invitational. UNG moves to 1-4 on the season with the victory.

The Nighthawks got on the board in the bottom of the second when Katie Block came up with a two-out RBI single through the right side to score Alexis Collis from second base to give UNG a 1-0 lead.

Meredith Heyer gave North Georgia some insurance in the sixth coming up with a three-run bomb over the fence in left center to put UNG up 4-0.

NOTES
– Poole struck out eight while only allowing two walks and five hits in her 2016 debut.

– Heyer’s long ball was just the fourth of her career after hitting two home runs in her sophomore campaign and one last season.

– The shutout was the first of the season for UNG after a rough weekend in the circle last week at the PBC/GSC Southern Softball Showdown in Columbus.
