DAHLONEGA | The 19th-ranked University of North Georgia women’s soccer team opened up its 2016 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Lees-McRae Thursday evening in front of a near capacity crowd at the UNG Soccer Complex.

After a scoreless first half, the Nighthawks came out on a surge in the second half as Rachel VanHorn knocked home the first North Georgia goal of the season on a through ball from Jacy Ramey in the 47th minute.

Ramey, UNG’s leading scorer from a season ago, picked up a goal of her own in the 71st as she outraced a Bobcat defender on a quick counter attack that followed a Lees-McRae corner kick.

NOTES
– The season opening victory is the third straight for UNG. The Nighthawks are 9-3-2 in season openers under Chris Adams.

– With her goal in the 71st minute tonight, Jacy Ramey moves into sole possession of third place in all-time UNG goal scorers at 25. Ramey follows Cicely Taliaferro (31; 2011-14) and Kelly Penston (42; 2009-13) on the list.

Kaitlyn Siberski and Hannah Goudy combined for the shutout in goal, aided an impressive performance from the UNG backline that only allowed two shots on the night.
