(Cleveland)- The White County Board of Education held the first of two budget public hearings for the tentative fiscal year 2023 school system Thursday.

 Director of Finance for the school system Julie Dorsey shared the numbers for the 42.9- million dollar budget. The school system will have to use some reserve funds to help meet the gap between the expected revenue and school budget expenses. 

The school system will hold a second public hearing on the tentative budget on June 28th at 7:45 AM.

During the meeting,  Superintendent Dr. Laurie Burket started her report off with a thank you to Sheriff  Rick Kelley, and SRO Jason Davis, for increasing patrols at the White County Schools during the last week.

Principal Jill Baughman of  Mt. Yonah Elementary School gave a presentation about the community and culture of MYES.  Team Time, which meets every month, is time for organization, morale-boosting fun events, improving the learning environment, and offering support.  Mrs. Baughman also took time to remember Mr. Shawn Cooper, who passed away in the fall of 2021.  Mr. Cooper was a fun, lively teacher who was loved by teachers, staff, and students.

          • Increase rates for ESS Non-Certified Teachers and Paraprofessional Substitute from $60 per day to $80 per day beginning with the 22-23 School year.
        • Student Matter:
          • Request to waive the local board requirement for 4 units of Social Studies for 3 WCHS students.  Each of these seniors’ transferred to WCHS with a .5 credit in civics and will meet the state requirement of 3 units of Social Studies.
