Oxford, Ala. – Fueled by eight runners in the top-20, the University of North Georgia women’s cross country team got its 2017 schedule underway on Friday afternoon by winning the White Division of the 12th Annual Strut’s Season Opener hosted by Jacksonville State at the Oxford Lake Course.
UNG scored 50 points, 17 ahead of runner up SCAD Atlanta, to claim the White Division which consisted of 10 non-Division I schools. Alabama-Huntsville was third with 88 points.
Senior Brittany Truitt led the way for North Georgia with a 4K time of 14:28, good for third out of 98 runners. Freshman Olivia Terwilliger got her college career off on a good note with a top-10 finish (15:20, 9th).
Truitt’s time was the fourth best overall out of all 170 racers.
The Nighthawks team depth was on display as Emily Sims, Jenna Sanborn, Sarah Buckler, Kenedi Rodney, Makayla Ellisand Maria Coughlin finished within six seconds of each other to claim places 13 through 18.
UNG next races on Sept. 16 when the Nighthawks host the 5th Annual UNG Invitational at the UNG Cross Country Course. The women’s 5K race is scheduled for an 8:15 a.m. start on the UNG Gainesville campus.
