(Atlanta)- The Georgia Mountains and Northeast Georgia regions saw record numbers for unemployed residents in the month of May, according to numbers released  Thursday  by the Georgia Department of Labor.

In the Georgia Mountains region, the number of employed residents grew to an all-time high with the preliminary unemployment rate for May at 2.9 percent. 

For White County GDOL said, the preliminary unemployment rate was 2.6 percent, down 9 tenths of a percent from the revised April rate. The labor department said in may the labor force was 16,416, with 15,986  having jobs while 430 did not. 

“Georgia’s economy remains very strong,” said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “Across the board, the state’s numbers are very positive for the year and many areas continue to set records.”
