(Atlanta)- The unemployment rate in White County soared to 10.7 percent in April, according to figures released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor.  The preliminary April rate of 10.7 percent, up from the revised rate of 3.5 percent in March and 2.5 percent a year ago. 

The labor department said in April the labor force in the county was 16,740, with 14,945 employed while 1,795 were unemployed.  

Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said the Georgia Mountains’ unemployment rate also spiked in April, reaching an all-time high. Due to the effects of COVID-19, all regions and counties throughout the state saw a dramatic incline in initial claims along with the unemployment rate.
